Avatar (2009)

Colonel Miles Quaritch - Stephen Lang

One thing that worried me about Avatar was the prolific use of CGI, and how Cameron was willing to solely rely on the use of CGI for 90% of the films make up and characters. But luckily the 15 year wait was enough for now day’s technology to be able to support such as rich and intense idea. Cameron wrote ‘AVATAR’ in the 90’s, but was unable to produce it because of the lack of CGI technology and almost 15 years later his vision has hit the screens with the full force of “Titanic”.

Avatar is three hours long which is quite long for any movie these days, some people seem to think that it starts to get a little boring around the middle section but really every minute of the movie should keep you as intrigued as the first five minutes – I certainly enjoyed every second. Like director Michael Bay, Cameron likes to blow shit up and to be honest its justifiable as the action scenes (which is practically every scene) get bigger and better by the minute.

There are some great performances  –  from Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver, Worthington as  the stories main protagonist Jake Skully and Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, a botanist who mentors Jake. What astounded me the most was the likeness of each actors Na’vi counterpart, especially Weavers which was almost of exact likeness (except age), Cameron must have had a great time bringing it all together having created some of the Tech himself.

One thing that critics are saying is that the soundtrack wasn’t very good, I quite like the chimes and magical feel that the soundtrack incorporates but to be honest I have no interest in the New Zealand critics they’re all a bunch of stuck up movie snobs who compare everything to LoTR.

As far as awards go Avatar will surely take it out for best visuals, not even the likes of Transformers could compete. Overall a great movie, a few plot holes but nothing major, if you haven’t seen it then make sure you do. Best seen on the big screen so don’t miss out, not sure how it will fare with a DVD release but happy day.
